Absolute best District 1 choice if location, ambience and service is as important as value for your money :)
Excellent location, Waterbus 5 minute walk to the left, Opera House 5 minutes straight, Little Japan (the feel of a Tokyo neighborhood) 5 minutes to the right. Staff and service are superb, without exception. Every guest is treated as a valued guest, the ambience and vibe couldn't have been better.
It is not one of the new, extravagant/trendy hotels springing up all over the City; probably the reason why this hotel feels so much more comfortable and "gemütlich"; because making you feel comfortable is the apparent focus of their operation. Wins out over trendy every time!
But if your preference is fancy limousines and the clientele who ride in them, you may want to look elsewhere. Notwithstanding, this is still the better place :)
Breakfast was way more varied than expected, virtually anything you could want no matter your diet or ethnic preference; afternoon tea (I believe included in every room rate option) was also quite good, quality fresh fruit options always available. (Extensive, diverse and 5-Star dining options are located all over the immediate neighborhood as well.)
Impressive river views from the roof top "plunge-pool, Jacuzzi, bar, lounge, dining" area, especially considering it's only on the 9th floor in a city full of 20 plus story buildings. The top floor also hosts a limited menu on-site spa.
Special thanks to Daniel (the star bartender), Sam and Alex, Sydney, Nine, Mike, Jennie and Ava, Mai, the Operations Manager, who graciously bid me farewell, to everyone else not listed but nonetheless fondly remembered. If I didn't live so far away, I'd be on the rooftop tonight :)
Finally, no need to decide on tours or activities before you arrive. The reception can recommend and arrange all the tours that meet your needs. I went with the motorcycle food tour, Monkey Island and Cu Chi Tunnels, all worth it at very reasonable prices.
The much hyped "Bodega Nightclub" is virtually next door. A quite fancy place that you enter through a door in the back of mini supermarket. Crazy cool. The "Apocalypse Now" Nightclub is directly next door, with some tables outside, a chair was always reserved for me and my nightly watermelon juice. Notwithstanding, noise is not an issue. The street the hotel is on is never busy with traffic, it is quiet day and night, well lit after dark, and safe. The pulsing heart and noise of the City is two short blocks away.
Cons:
There was nothing not to like. Really.
Two things to know before you book:
The elevator does not reach the rooftop level; there are stairs involved, just in case that is an issue of concern for someone (stairs lead from street level to the lobby as well.)
My stay was just shy of three weeks; in a Junior Suite with an impressive river-view room, complete with all the expected room amenities plus more.
Please note that not all rooms have outside windows or any kind of view. If your budget allows, book a river view room, top floors if available; and if your stay is longer, consider opting for the more spacious Junior Suite, or the apparently very spacious King Suite.
In the end, no matter what your chosen room option, all rooms come with the cool rooftop space and the same incredible city and river views.
.....which explains why virtually every newcomer pulls out the camera the first time they arrive at "Jolie's Garden" rooftop bar.
